Compress PDF Files Without Uploading Them

Reduce PDF file size for email attachments, portals and upload limits. Choose light, balanced or strong compression, or aim for 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB or your own target. The PDF is processed in your browser and never sent to our server.

Balanced and strong turn each page into an image.
Best effort. The tool tries stronger settings until the file fits.
How it works

How This Tool Compresses PDF Files

Light compression rebuilds the PDF with a tidier, more compact internal structure without changing how it looks. Balanced and strong compression render each page to a high quality image and rebuild the PDF from those images, which shrinks scanned and photo-heavy documents dramatically.

PDF files grow large for a few common reasons: scanned pages saved at high resolution, embedded photos straight from a camera, repeated fonts and images, and leftover data from editing. Different files need different approaches, so the tool gives you a choice.

Light compression uses pdf-lib to re-save the document with object streams, which packs the internal data more efficiently. The pages, text and links stay exactly as they were. The saving depends on how the file was created, and on some PDFs it is small.

Balanced and strong compression use pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs, to draw every page at a set resolution and save it as a JPEG image. The new PDF keeps the original page sizes, so it prints and views at the same dimensions.

Levels

Choosing a Compression Level

LevelWhat it doesBest forTrade-off
LightLossless clean-up of the file structureText documents, forms, files you may editSmaller savings, sometimes none
BalancedPages rendered at about 150 DPI, good JPEG qualityScans, brochures, reports with photos, email attachmentsText cannot be selected
StrongPages rendered at about 96 DPI, lower JPEG qualityVery large scans and strict upload limitsFine print may look soft

If you pick a target size, the tool starts with light compression and steps up through balanced and strong, and then two stronger settings if needed, stopping at the first result that fits. It always gives you the smallest result it produced, and tells you plainly whether the target was met.

Step by step

How to Compress a PDF

  1. Add your PDF. Drag it onto the drop area or click to choose it.
  2. Pick a level or a target. Use balanced for most files, or choose 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB or a custom size when a portal sets a limit.
  3. Compress. Progress is shown page by page for balanced and strong compression.
  4. Check and download. Compare the original and compressed sizes and the reduction, then download the new file. Open it once before you send it.
Common uses

When a Smaller PDF Helps

Email providers and many business systems cap attachment sizes, and online forms for job applications, tenders, councils and government services often set strict limits per file. A smaller PDF also opens faster on phones and uses less storage in shared drives.

Brochures and marketing PDFs

Design files exported for print are often much larger than needed for screens. If you share brochures, menus or price lists online, a balanced copy for the web and the full-quality original for the printer is a good habit. Our brochure, flyer and poster design team supplies both versions as standard.

Scanned documents

Scanners and phone scanning apps often save at very high resolution. Balanced compression usually keeps scans readable while cutting the size substantially.

Images inside documents

If you are building a PDF from photos, shrinking them first with our batch photo compressor keeps the final document small and lets you keep the text selectable.

Privacy and limits

Privacy and Honest Limitations

The compressor runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded, stored or logged by ZTechzSolutions, and the compressed file is created in your browser’s memory until you download it or leave the page.

  • Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are not supported.
  • Balanced and strong compression remove selectable text, links, bookmarks, form fields and annotations from the compressed copy.
  • Very large documents use a lot of memory; on older phones, try light compression or split the file.
  • Results vary with the content. A target is a goal the tool works towards, not a guarantee.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is read and rebuilt inside your browser using the open-source pdf.js and pdf-lib libraries, which are downloaded from a public CDN only when you press Compress PDF. Your document is not sent to ZTechzSolutions and nothing is kept after you close or refresh the page.

Will I still be able to select and search the text?

With light compression, yes, because the original text and structure are kept. Balanced and strong compression turn each page into an image, so text in the compressed copy cannot be selected, searched or read by screen readers, and links and form fields are removed. Keep your original file for editing.

Why did my PDF not get much smaller?

PDFs made mostly of text are often already small, and light compression can only tidy up the file structure. Big savings usually come from scanned pages and large photos, which balanced and strong compression reduce. If a smaller version is not possible, the tool keeps your original rather than giving you a bigger file.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted PDFs cannot be read without the password, and the tool will not try to bypass protection. Open the file in your PDF app, remove the password or save an unprotected copy, then compress that copy.

Is there a page or file limit?

There is no daily limit or account. For browser stability the tool accepts one PDF at a time up to 100 MB, and balanced or strong compression handles up to 300 pages. Larger documents can be split first.

Which level should I choose for email?

Start with balanced. It usually brings scanned documents and image-heavy brochures down to a size most email systems accept while keeping pages readable. Choose a target such as 2 MB if you know the exact limit.

Is it safe to compress contracts or personal documents?

Because processing stays in your browser, the document does not travel to a third-party server. Still check the compressed copy before sending it, and keep the original, especially for documents that need signatures, form fields or selectable text.
